We all know that our blood needs oxygen. A well oxygenated blood would be reddish in color while blood that is not getting enough oxygen would have a dark, bluish color. Pulse oximeters are a non-invasive method of finding out how much oxygen from the heart is contained in your blood or in your circulatory system. A pulse oximeter is usually placed either in your fingertip or in your earlobe. Pulse oximeters measure the color of your blood using a light and a detector.
A pulse oximeter works in a way that it will show how well the light is absorbed by the hemoglobin in the patient’s blood. Hemoglobin saturated with oxygen reflects a different light that levels that are not saturated, mainly due to some kind of pulmonary condition. The amount of oxygen for any patient should not be altered without the go signal of a doctor. So talk to the doctor, you’ll never know if a pulse oximeter is a necessity for your home.
